Consider the role of the social contract and its connection to sources of social capital. Who benefits and who loses?

Consider the sense of belonging that occurs in your community. Is it cohesive or fragmented? Look at the activities that are designed to bring communities together. What social institutions are designated for such activity? For example, schools, churches, community centers are all such institutions.

In framing your essay, be sure to demonstrate the means by which social capital encourages community development. Is there evidence to suggest a decline in social capital and a fragmented community? Does community involvement lead to greater citizen participation?

Some questions to guide your observations and writing:

What types of associations are active in your community? Is there an absence of such? Is there a reason?
Does your community have a strong religious base? Is there diversity of religion? What role does the church play?
Is the quality of public life and the performance of social institutions influenced by norms and networks of civic engagement?
Is there evidence of distrust in government? Do citizen interact with local government officials?
Is there a presence of union membership or worker organizations?
Is education a means for bringing people together? Is there an active Parent Teacher Association?
